The New Year
So we decided to go on the Yurt trip. We leave tomorrow at noon. We have to snowshoe (well Chris and I are snowshoeing, everyone else is cross country skiing) in to the yurt, but it's only about a mile, so even though I've never snowshoed, it shouldn't be that bad, right? I'm excited. We'll spend 2 nights there, with 5 other adults and a two-year old. We're taking plenty of beer and liquor.
This New Year's Eve marks 5 years since the first time Chris and I went out. I would say that it marks 5 years since our first date, but it wasn't really a date. I invited Chris out to the bar that I was going to be at celebrating New Year's with my roommate and the guy she was dating, and then I proceeded to get drunk and mack on him. Is that a date? It was definitely my MO back then. And it WORKED, so whatever.
Reigning Champ?
Our Christmas was really great. We had fun at the Christmas Eve open house we went to. After we left that we went to the 10pm service at the Unitarian Church. I have to say, I expected a better service, but it still felt magical and wonderful and can I just say that candlelight on Christmas is just so beautiful?
I couldn't sleep in on Christmas morning, so we got up around 9:30am and opened our presents. I got a pair of earrings, a gift card to Nordstrom, and a microwave for my cube! I was convinced that I wasn't getting the microwave because my boxes under the tree were small. But Chris had put a picture of a microwave in a little box and wrapped that. The microwave itself was in the garage. Very clever!
We hung out for the rest of the morning, and around noon we started cooking for our Christmas dinner. People showed up around 2:30pm, and dinner was served around 3pm. It was no-stress and really fun. We played with the cute babies and played games and ended the night with the Tetris tournament.
There is some confusion over who won the Christmas Tetris Tournament. I won, but then Melody demanded a rematch, and she won that one. So it's not over, is about all I can tell you.
This week is really slow at work, so it's been very relaxing. We're not sure what we're doing for New Year's, if anything. We've been invited to go on a Yurt trip, but snowshoeing a mile to a yurt in the freezing temperatures might not be the way I want to spend my New Year's Eve. Or maybe it is. I have to decide by tomorrow.
Serioulsy, A Teacup?!?
I had a really fabulous weekend. It was snowy and cold, as December should be, and it was fun to stay inside and be all snuggly together. We have Season 2 of Big Love from the library, so we watched some episodes of that. I love that show, it makes me want to be a polygamist.
We spent Friday night with Jessica, exchanging gifts. She had great food out, as always, and we ate and drank and did this thing on the internet that tells you which celebrities you look me. (Me = 71% like Beyonce. I'll take it!)
Saturday we spent shopping (for ourselves, not others) during the day and we just chilled that night. Old Crow Medicine Show was going to be on Austin City Limits on PBS at midnight. We tried to stay up to watch that, but when it came on OCMS wasn't the first band on, and I gave up and went to bed. Chris was already passed out because he was drunk. Hee! He was making gin and tonics, and at one point I watched him make one and he was using a TEACUP for a measuring device. Like, each G&T contained one teacup of gin and one teacup of tonic. I love that crazy bastard.
Sunday we spent cleaning and hanging out. We stopped by Joanna's and she gave us some awesome cookies that she made, a modification of my awesome oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. (She subbed pecans and cranberries for the chocolate and butterscotch chips, with fabulous results.) That evening we had our friend John over for dinner. We had salmon and butternut squash. After we ate he picked up his son and brought him over and we played XBOX and schooled him in the ways of the old video games. He is a great kid, and plays a mean game of Centipede now.
I worked today, because we didn't have it off and I wasn't going to take a vacation day when we weren't going anywhere. We have a Christmas Eve open house to go to tonight, and then tomorrow we're having Christmas dinner for 8 (plus 2 kids) at our place at 2pm. So I have to be kind of good tonight, cooking hung over is no fun. Melody and Jeff are bringing their XBOX controllers over tomorrow and we're going to have a 4-way Tetris tournament. Can you say "nerdiest Christmas ever?"
Fucking Cones
Right, so the making of treats didn't happen this year. Not because I didn't want to make the treats themselves, but because the containers for the treats (festive cones) that I was going to make pissed me right the fuck off. I'm pretty notorious for not doing things I don't want to do, and at that moment on Wednesday night, I didn't want to make the damn treats. So I didn't. I'm sure my coworkers aren't exactly sobbing because they didn't get cinnamon and sugar almonds from me.
Oops, I Kind Of Disappeared There
Because the Iowans were in town! Remember? Geez, pay attention. Their visit was great, and I was kind of sad all day yesterday after we took them to the airport. But Jesse and Sharon had a little Christmas party last night which cheered me considerably. I was further cheered today when I received a bonus at work for some outstanding work I did on a project a couple of months ago. I know! Random cash at Christmas time? Sign me up!!
The next week is going to fly by. Tonight we have to finish our Christmas cards. Tomorrow we are making treats for work folks and wrapping presents. Thursday we may go to a play, or we may see Jessica to exchange presents with her. Friday night Steph and Tom and stopping by, and Saturday we're going to relax by getting a facial (me) and a massage (Chris). Guess which of these events I am most looking forward to?
Sunday we will probably spend cleaning and grocery shopping for our Christmas day dinner, and then we are working on Monday, on Christmas Eve. We have a Christmas Eve party to go to that night, and we're going to try to go to the midnight service at the Unitarian Church. If we drink too much wine and don't make it to that we won't be too heartbroken.
Christmas will be spent cooking and eating dinner and entertaining the people who are coming over to eat dinner, and then we will be in the home stretch of 2007. Not that I'm in a rush for it to be over but I am kind of anxious to get rid of my 2007 calendar. The 2008 is already up and having 2 bothers my OCD.
Wow, so I didn't accomplish ANYTHING on my to-do list this weekend. I did spend 5 hours shopping with Joanna on Saturday and spending money that I don't have. Well, I have it, it just wasn't earmarked for things like nightstands and duvet covers. Sigh. Like I need to make my bed more inviting? I can't get up as it is.
Also accomplished: I beat my own high score at Donkey Kong and I made it to the tenth level! To say I was excited would be an understatement. To say I am slowly wasting my life away playing video games would also be an understatement. But I'm not going to think about that.
Sean and Charlotte arrive from Iowa on Wednesday, so tonight we need to grocery shop and put sheets on the guest bed, and we should probably clean the bathrooms, also. We should also start Christmas cards, and I'd like to make Christmas treats for my work peeps.
What will probably happen is that I will drink beer and do the bare minimum that I need to do, and my co-workers will be SOL. If they enjoy tales of Donkey Kong, however, it will be their lucky week. And really? Who doesn't enjoy a good Donkey Kong story? So there I was, and barrels were coming at me from every direction...
My Teeth Are Chattering Like Beavis'
I'm doing a happy dance because it's Friday. And also because it was free coffee Friday at my job and I drank way too much of it and now I can't be still.
This week has been so damn long, and I feel like I haven't seen Chris at all because it was his finals week and when he wasn't at school he was studying. I think he's free tonight though, but I don't know what we're going to do. We might go to Brewvies and drink a beer and see Across the Universe, but we also might pass out at 7pm, so who knows?
Tomorrow Chris has to meet school people at 9am (finals are done but they still have a paper to do) and I'm going to go to a Festivus shopping thing with Joanna. Actually, first I'm going to stop by her place and she's gonna make me a coffee with peppermint schnappes, and THEN we're going to Festivus.
Other things I'd like to accomplish this weekend are: writing some Christmas cards, taking our goodwill items to goodwill, and putting sheets on the guest bed for Sean and Charlotte's impending visit. (They arrive on Wednesday!)
The Ocho
Okay, so this 8 Random Things About Me meme has been going around, and god help me, I'm gonna do it. So:
1) I find something attractive about almost anyone. Along the same vein, there are very few people that I don't enjoy talking to, at least for a little while.
2) I love makeup, even though I don't wear it everyday. I also prefer to wear heels whenever I can. Flats make me feel dowdy. Flip flops are the only exception to this rule.
3) I don't like Chinese food. I'll eat it, but I'll never suggest it. I honestly can't remember the last time I ate Chinese. It was probably years ago.
4) I go back and forth between wanting 5 children and wanting 0. Sometimes on an hourly basis. I think having a big family would be fun, but I also wonder if having kids is better suited to people who are more emotionally stable than me.
5) I'm a major blog lurker. I've been trying to get better with the commenting.
6) When I run I make up cool music videos in my head for whatever song is playing on my iPod. My best videos to date are the ones I've made up for Lenny Kravitz' cover of "American Woman" and Fatboy Slim's "Praise You".
7) I'm left-handed.
8) I can juggle. I can only do three balls right now, but in high school I worked up to four. I would love to be able to do juggling tricks. There is a juggling group in town and I keep saying that I'm going to go to one of their meetings, but I never do.
Anything To Get My Lady Business Out Of First Post Position
So. Let's talk.
Last night I went to a hockey game with Steph. We met up with some of her nursing student friends and it was a really good time. The Grizzlies won, 3-1 over the Phoenix Roadrunners. There was even a penalty goal, and if that wasn't enough, it was $1 beer night. We scalped our tickets out front for $10, so it was a great cheap night out. And Steph let me drive her Honda to the game, so I was excited from the get-go.
I was a wee bit hung over this morning (and no, I didn't drive home thank you very much) but not bad. A coworker did ask if I was sick, but that was only because I had morning-after gravelly voice from yelling at the game.
I probably won't do much of anything tonight because I'm tired. As Joanna pointed out, I'm getting old and I need time to recover. Thank you very much, Jo.
More Lady Business
Doesn't it seem like I just posted about my Lady Business? Well I did, because I had a period just 22 damn days ago. For those of you who care, my cycles since I have been free of birth control have been as follow:
31
24
28
26
22
There are your lottery numbers for tonight's drawing. I'm so surprised that I haven't ended up accidentally pregnant yet. Not that that would be horrible. It definitely wouldn't be a disaster, hell, it would be welcome, but seriously? 22 days?
