Losing My Mind

Last night I went to FIVE different grocery stores looking for a couple of eggplants. (And on a related note, why do I pick the worst days to wear stilettos?) When did my life get so exciting? It's hard to pinpoint, it has been such a whirlwind, really.

Would you even think that there are FIVE grocery stores within a 1 mile radius of each other? Well there are. Witness!

How much food does one valley need? A lot, apparently. Store A (Smith's) had eggplants, but they were brown and sickly and generally Not Well. Stores B (Albertson's) and C (Wild Oats) had them, but for $4 each. Are you serious? Store D (another Smith's) didn't have them at all. But I was rewarded for my insanity persistence at Store E (yet another Smith's Food King), where I scored healthy looking eggplants for a respectable $1.69 each.

The highlight of my night was when (at store D) a guy with 3 teeth told me that my shoes (pointy-toed stiletto boots) were going to give me bunions. Was that a pick-up line?

I've had the same issue with fresh basil lately. I have to conclude that there's been some kind of National Basil Situation, because I went to FIVE grocery stores and didn't find fresh basil at ANY of them.

And I'm the type of person who would have paid the $4 for the eggplant. The DUMB type.

If time is money, paying $4 for the eggplant would have been smart. I'm forced to conclude that my time isn't worth anything.

The sooner you come clean and admit that you're just a Wild Oats New Age Princess (WONAP), the better we'll all be able to tease you!

It is ironic you posted this just now because yesterday while driving around atlanta picking up asian spices (mostly indian and halal stuff) it occured to me that your folks couldn't buy ANYTHING they needed there in MA. That must have sucked to have to wait to make something if they were out, but I guess I know the feeling now being stuck in the ultimate redneckville... you can't even get fresh cilantro here or somen or udon... UGH..... thank god i'm an hour from atlanta ( where the Japanese Consolate is) and the asian markets there are SUPER DUPER! ne who... be good!

Tiff, yeah they had to buy all of our spices and lentils and things in Des Moines. Then they stored it in the basement. :)

I can't believe you can't even get fresh cilantro there! That sucks. You'll have to start an herb garden!
